“Otwock” is a project revolving around a place perceived through the lens of art.

The place has a twofold meaning. It refers to the hometown of the sculptor Mirosław Bałka and of his childhood home, which he has turned into a studio. The studio triggered a reflection on the relationship between art and the space in which it is made. The town has become an expanded space of work.

“Otwock” is an attempt at creating a subjective description of the place. Invited artists, curators and writers work with the found context, which is suspended between history and presence, between personal and official narratives, between the public and private sphere, between the changing functions of space.

The method which has been adopted is best described by the notions of site specific and site responsive. The works, the elusive artistic gestures, the texts or events uncover new layers of meanings. They form a loose grid of associations and connections. By mutually complementing each other, they establish questions and proposals leading to changing interpretations and new ways of approaching the local.

The artists who have thus far worked in “Otwock” include Lara Almarcegui, Tacita Dean, Anna Molska, Charlotte Moth and Luc Tuymans.

The introduction to the project will take place on 20 October 2012, at 18.30 at Stacja Falenica Cinema & Café, and will include presentations by Mirosław Bałka, Teresa Gleadowe and Kasia Redzisz.

The presentations will be followed by Home Studio, a film programme curated by Mike Sperlinger and Gil Leung (LUX), presenting works by Ed Atkins, Wojciech Bruszewski, Sebastian Buerkner, John Smith, Margaret Tait, and Steina & Woody Vasulka. The event will be accompanied by a publication titled Otwock. The Vanishing Points.

“Otwock” is carried out by Open Art Projects and Mirosław Bałka, coordinated by Magda Materna and curated by Kasia Redzisz.
