Profile
IKT is the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art. It is a members’ organisation that brings together curators from across the world to meet, share knowledge, exchange ideas and broaden their professional network. IKT was founded in 1973 and its early members included prominent curators such as Eberhard Roters, Eddy de Wilde and Harald Szeemann. Today it counts around 350 active members, working for institutions or independently, who constitute a unique forum of curatorial thinking and practice. Its aim is to stimulate and extend debate concerning curating, as well as to represent the interests of curators worldwide. IKT also offers its members the opportunity to find partners for the co-production of exhibitions, publications and other events.
Annual congress
IKT’s congresses provide a moment for reflection and in-depth discussion between colleagues. They are hosted at a different place each year and include a symposium, visits to institutions and artists’ studios, and various activities related to curatorial practice. The symposium explores a current topic related to curating and contemporary art. Congress participants can present their current projects during the Members’ Forum and take part in the General Assembly, in which IKT activities are discussed.
Recent congresses have taken place in Tel Aviv-Yafo (2012), Luxembourg (2011), Athens (2010), Helsinki/Tallin (2009), and Montreal (2008). Participation is reserved for IKT members, but we are always looking to expand the membership of IKT and welcome applications from all curators working in the non-profit field.
In 2013, the congress will take place in Madrid on 19–21 April. Madrid’s art scene has grown intensely over the past years and constitutes an important point of contact between Europe and Latin America. Furthermore, the city has gained international significance and developed a thriving alternative art scene through newly founded exhibition spaces. These aspects will play a pivotal role during the IKT congress in Madrid, whose symposium will explore the notion of value.
Informal gatherings
Between the yearly congresses, IKT members meet often to share ideas and develop projects. To foster this informal exchange, we have organized a sequence of get-togethers in recent months. Our next gathering will take place in Paris on Friday, 19 October 2012.We will meetat Le Café Beaubourg at 5.30pm. If you are already a member, or are interested in becoming one, please come along to meet the board and have a drink with us.
