Inaugurated in September 2011, L’Inventaire is designed to take stock of Frac Haute-Normandie’s collection every year at the start of the season in September, with an exhibition of works from the Catalogue according to their inventory number. Although something of a mystery to the general public, this number is extremely important as it indicates the order in which each of the works entered the collection. Quite apart from its legal basis, this code number is an essential component in charting the history of the Collection. The method used in L’Inventaire takes these numbers in chronological order so as to explore its underlying rationale and connections. This long-term project will continue anew every year until the last number in the catalogue is reached.
For its first edition, L’Inventaire brought together works acquired by Frac Haute-Normandie over the period 1983 and 1984, with an exhibition of 148 pieces at the Frac exhibition space and at Louviers Municipal Museum. The second instalment will give visitors a chance to view works that entered the Catalogue in 1985, numbering 198 pieces displayed throughout the Frac. For the first time, Guy Lemonnier’s significant installation Caillebottis [kajboti] will also be displayed in full at Saint-Julien Chapel, Petit-Quevilly.
After two years spent setting up Frac and the collection, 1985 heralded the arrival of its first director, Yves Bourel, to run the Normandy-based institution. The second instalment not only looks at this turning point in the institution’s organisation and history, but also, first and foremost, highlights the aesthetic choices and focus of the Frac Haute-Normandie collection.
