MANIFESTA 9
Former coalmining complex of Waterschei
Genk, Province of Limburg, Belgium
Manifesta 9, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, will take place from June 2 until September 30, 2012 in the former Waterschei coal-mining complex in the city of Genk, Limburg (Belgium), under the direction of curator Cuauhtémoc Medina (Mexico) and co-curators Katerina Gregos (Greece) and Dawn Ades (United Kingdom). The Deep of the Modern intends to create a complex dialogue between different layers of art and history. Its point of departure is the geographical location itself. The remains of the Waterschei mine in Genk, Limburg, the main venue of Manifesta 9, are not the only protagonists in this story. The Deep of the Modern was inspired by the “mining machine” that transformed the region over the course of the 20th century, giving rise to a complex landscape of garden cities, landscape planning, canals, roads, and railroads.

One wish is always left unfulfilled. Kasper König takes stock
Museum Ludwig, Cologne
Heinrich-Böll-Platz, 50667 Cologne
In November 2001, Kasper König opened the exhibition Museum of our Wishes, in which he clearly presented his views regarding the collection at Museum Ludwig. He brought 120 works to the museum and marked them with a silver tag as wishes for the enlargement of the collection. With the help of patrons, donors, and supporters he managed to place a golden tag on almost all of these works, showing that they were wishes come true. With this, the strengths of the collection and its potential for growth became clear, as did the glaring gaps. For over ten years Kasper König has consistently expanded the museum’s collection. And central to this curatorial work has always been the question, how can temporary exhibitions serve the aims of the collection and vice versa, how can new exhibitions be initiated from the collection itself? The development of the collection at Museum Ludwig through this close combination of exhibitions and permament collection will now be illuminated by means of select works. And the title can be understood as a part of the agenda, because: One wish is always left unfulfilled.
