Artissima 19
9–11 November 2012
8 November: Preview and opening
Oval, Lingotto Fiere, Torino
Greetings from Torino!
Same city, same venue, same identity. New project, new initiatives, new director.
On November 8, under the direction of Sarah Cosulich Canarutto, Artissima 19 will be inaugurating a far-reaching programme that features an outstanding selection of cutting-edge contemporary art galleries. The Oval pavilion will host top-tier booth presentations by established and emerging galleries from over 30 countries and a stunning calendar of parallel initiatives aimed at involving collectors and the general public.
Artissima’s traditional sections will include: Main Section, dedicated to well-known galleries that focus on the promotion of new talent; New Entries, which brings together the most interesting international galleries that have been operating for less than five years; Present Future, devoted to a group of emerging artists invited by a team of young curators from Colombia, the US, Switzerland, Egypt and Italy; and Back to the Future, a particularly significant section presenting projects by artists from the 1960s and ’70s who have had little formal recognition in past decades but whose work is particularly relevant today. The artists in this section will be selected and proposed by renowned curators Jan Hoet, Vasif Kortun, Joanna Mytkowska, and Vicente Todolí.
Artissima is a window onto the most experimental frontier of the visual arts and attracts the interest of professionals, the general public and the media, with nearly 50,000 visitors and over 1,350 accredited journalists attending the fair in 2011. Important curators, museum representatives, and specialists in the field from all over the world are involved in its projects, committees, and juries.
Collectors from both Italy and abroad will find a special programme and a number of targeted initiatives that will enrich their experience of the fair and the city.
Artissima constitutes a moment of peak visibility for contemporary art in Italy. Torino can boast a vast number of museums, foundations and galleries, as well as a range of organizations dedicated to contemporary culture, all particularly active during the fair week.
This year the main cultural initiative coordinated by Artissima, with public funding, will feature an important collaboration among the city’s main institutions for contemporary art. Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, GAM Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Artissima will present a common project consisting of four different exhibitions dealing with today’s society and its socio-political issues. This initiative will be titled It’s Not the End of the World, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Maya prophecy associated with December 2012 and a positive rejoinder to the difficulties that culture can face today. The projects will take place in the different institutional venues or in public spaces: a way of bolstering the city’s contemporary art network and expanding the exhibition programme in Torino.
In addition, the parallel programming coordinated by Artissima will include the second edition of the LIDO project, which has the more experimental mission of presenting the work of young artists who are not yet represented by a gallery. Held in the evening after the fair closes for the day, Artissima LIDO will inhabit and transform a series of empty storefronts or atypical locations in the Quadrilatero Romano, a fascinating neighbourhood in the centre of Torino. This year, Artissima will invite alternative spaces from around the world to present extraordinary exhibition projects in this unusual setting.
