Daniel Jacoby: Latsempoar

Daniel Jacoby (born in Lima, Peru, 1985, lives and works in Barcelona, Spain) was invited to Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain for the winter residency (from January to March 2012). His project’s point of departure was the creation of a Golden Record of the Grand Duchy. This kind of record, in the image of those produced by NASA in the 1970s, is meant to contain information to represent life on Earth, intended for any extra-terrestrial life form who might find it. On the basis of this purely symbolic concept of the image of a place—and in view of the minute probability that these records will, in fact, be discovered—Daniel Jacoby wanted to create an imaginary, fictional Luxembourg, with creative natives involved in its conception.

For the project’s first phase, Daniel Jacoby worked with five young professionals from five different fields of creation: photographer Sarah Capesius, 3D designer Serge Ecker, writer Alexandre Hornbeck, graphic designer Mik Muhlen, and composer Gilles Noesen. This network of associates had to contribute to the elaboration of a fictional story, through their individual fields of competence. A sizeable challenge for these artists who, used to solitary work, had to bend to the rules of collective work and the exchange of ideas to attain a process of symbiotic creation. As for Daniel Jacoby, he shook off the role of artist “creator” to assume that of federator and instigator. During his project, the “Aquarium” became his research office where fiction took form and was tested.

Completion of the conception phase materialised with the participants’ departure and the end of the creative think tank. The many material testimonies—written notes, diagrams, music samples, image fragments, sculptured objects—are material traces left in the “Aquarium” at the symbolic closure of the office, tangible milestones in this quest for a fictional Luxembourg or Latsempoar.

The work of reading and interpreting signs returns to Daniel Jacoby. By linking the referential elements—in the end, a fictional story can only be created from and in a given reality—Daniel Jacoby recreates the story in a personal book.

Curators: Kevin Muhlen, Christine Walentiny.
