Art Public Opening Night
Art Basel Miami Beach collaborates with the Bass Museum of Art for the first time on the Art Public sector, which will transform Collins Park with a record number of public art works. Featuring sculptures and performances by renowned artists and emerging talents, the sector opens to the public with a specially curated program of performances by Theaster Gates and the Black Monks of Mississippi, Sanford Biggers and Moon Medicine, and Alalaô presenting Ronald Duarte.

Wednesday | November 30
8pm | A Sermon On Art History by Theaster Gates and The Black Monks of Mississippi.
Theaster Gates and the Black Monks will respond in song and verse to the works of Art Public in an art historical and monastic manner.

9pm | Mixtape by Sanford Biggers and Moon Medicine
This evocative and experimental performance will combine images of punk, funk, film noir, sci-fi with traditional Samoan dance, Buddhism and original video content. Sanford Biggers (keyboard and laptop); Jahi Sundance (DJ); Mark Hines (VJ); Martin Luther (guitar and vocals), Imani Uzuri (vocals), and Swiss Chris (drums).

10pm | Alalaô presents Nimbo Oxalà by Ronald Duarte, with Marcus Wagner (DJ) and live Cuban music. The Alalaô collective, founded in January 2011 by Marcio Botner and Ernesto Neto of A Gentil Carioca and the artist Marcus Wagner, will present ‘Nimbo Oxalà’ by Brazilian artist Ronald Duarte and will bring the Carioca beach spirit of Rio de Janeiro to Miami Beach.

Art Public is free and open to the public, 24 hours per day, from December 1–4, 2011.

Art Video Nights
Art Video Nights will be presented in SoundScape Park on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the New World Center. Selected by David Gryn, Director of London’s Artprojx, Art Video will feature film and video works by many of today’s most exciting international artists, presented by the galleries of Art Basel Miami Beach.

Wednesday | November 30
8pm | Landscape — Total running time approximately 54′
The ‘Landscape’ program brings together film and video works with a literal or figurative take on its theme. Each work will take viewers on a curious journey to extraordinary places and unpossessed landscapes.

9pm | Dancer
The latest film by Miami-based artist Dara Friedman, ‘Dancer’ turns Miami’s street corners into a stage. Filming its performers from a slow-moving van and simultaneously transmitting an upbeat soundtrack into various neighborhoods, making passersby appear to be breaking into dance.

Friday | December 2
8pm | Americania — Total running time approximately 42′
Setting the scene for ‘Americania’ in Miami Beach, the selection of short films was inspired by Martha Rosler’s one-minute film ‘God Bless America.’ The program offers a distinctive window onto the United States and the multi-faceted reactions towards the country by various artists.

9pm | Music and Dance — Total running time approximately 40′
The program consists of a selection of films that play on the themes of music and dance, mesmerizing and capturing its audience. The videos share a simplicity, a joie de vivre and an engagement that allow the viewer to observe the ordinary through extra-ordinary means.

Saturday | December 3
8pm | Painterly — Total running time approximately 55′
This program combines film, animation, sculpture and painting in an intriguing way. The vigorous artists’ gestures correspond with the fluid wonders of digital technology.

9pm | Brief Features — Total running time approximately 73′
Brief Features presents works that hold the tension, visual captivation, imagination and quality of a full-length arthouse movie, and then offers a little bit more.

A selection of videos from the Art Video Nights program will also be shown within five viewing pods at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Art Film
This year’s Art Film, selected again by Zurich film connoisseur This Brunner, will be the United States premiere of ‘Gerhard Richter Painting’ directed by Corinna Belz.

Friday | December 2
8.30pm | Gerhard Richter Painting (2011) by Corinna Belz — 97′
The screening at the Colony Theater is followed by a discussion with director Corinna Belz, moderated by Louisa Buck, The Art Newspaper’s Contemporary Art Correspondent.
Free public access, but seating is limited.
