AOL Presents Seven on Seven:
A conference bridging contemporary art and technology
May 14, 2011 from 1–6pm at the New Museum
The Seven on Seven participants technologists are Andy Baio, of Expert Labs; Ben Cerveny, president of Bloom Studio; Kellan Elliott-McCrea, formerly Flickr Architect now VP of engineering at Etsy; Jeri Ellsworth, engineer and game designer; Bre Pettis, founder of Makerbot and NYCresistor; Chris Poole, aka “moot,” founder of 4Chan and Canvas; and Erica Sadun, noted iPhone app designer. The artists are Michael Bell-Smith, Ricardo Cabello, Cao Fei, Liz Magic Laser, Zach Lieberman, Rashaad Newsome, and Camille Utterback. The seven teams will work together at spaces around New York City on Friday, May 13th to develop an idea for something new—be it an application, social media, artwork, design, product or whatever they imagine. The conference on Saturday, May 14th will include 20-minute presentations by each team, with time allotted for conversation with the intimate audience at the New Museum.
Seven on Seven is inspired by ’9 Evenings,’ an influential 1966 event organized by E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology) that paired visual artists, musicians and dancers with scientists and engineers. Seven on Seven first took place in April 2010, and featured teams including video artist Ryan Trecartin and Tumblr founder David Karp, who created Riverthe.net, a dynamic video-sharing application that also allows users to create their own video playlists and was featured in the New Museum’s fall 2010 “Free” exhibition, as well as Delicious founder and former Google programmer Joshua Schachter and Raqs Media Collective’s Monica Narula, who founded an application that allows participants to pay away personal guilt by financially supporting good deeds. Following this successful first year, AOL presents the 2011 Seven on Seven, as their commitment to creativity and innovation syncs with the conference goals.
