Call for applications: Nomad Interdisciplinary MFA

The Nomad MFA delivers an expanded, field-based curriculum built for artists creating a regenerative future. Generous scholarships available. 

The Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, is now accepting applications to the Nomad MFA program. Students in the Nomad MFA live all over the world, and travel to locations throughout the America’s for residencies twice a year. Created in 2015, the Nomad MFA program is an accredited, low-residency graduate program offered by the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School. It features a high-impact curriculum that includes art, ecology, study of place, indigenous knowledge systems, anti-racism training, decolonial studies, and a craft-to-code technology continuum. The Nomad MFA is the MFA of the future, providing artists deeper ways of engaging with their home community and a network of communities in the Americas. The curriculum addresses today’s most pressing cultural, environmental and social issues through embodied, ethical learning strategies. This singular MFA program is dedicated to regenerative culture. Sites include rural and urban El Salvador; Oaxaca, Mexico; New York City; rural and urban New Mexico; Oakland, CA; South Florida; Minnesota; and the Hudson River Valley, as well as Hartford, Connecticut. Due to the pandemic, the curriculum is currently utilizing a hyperlocal learning strategy. The Nomad MFA supports many types of art practices, including eco art, social engagement, art and pedagogy, community art, art and healing, and traditional and experimental practices that explore craft and technology traditions. Through Nomad MFA coursework, students prepare for an ambitious, lifelong creative practice.
