December 2010: Four Exhibitions

MAXXI Arte presents

4 December 2010 – 20 March 2011
ITALIAN CONTEMPORARY ART PRIZE
Rosa Barba/ Rossella Biscotti/ Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio/ Piero Golia

curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi

Rosa Barba, Rossella Biscotti, Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio and Piero Golia, all artists under 40 years old, are the finalists in the first edition of the Italian Contemporary Art Prize. Through to 20 March MAXXI will be devoting an exhibition to the artists with site-specific installations designed and produced for the occasion. An international jury will announce the winner on 3 December, with the artist’s work being acquired by the MAXXI Arte collection. In all of the projects, recent Italian history and the burning issues of the moment are combined with more intimate themes, in a continuous alternation of idioms and dialogues between art and architecture.

4 December 2010 – 13 February 2011
CONTEMPORANEO.DOC/DOCVA
The Careof and Viafarini Archive

a MAXXI BASE project curated by Giulia Ferracci and Carolina Italiano

The public may consult 3015 portfolios by young Italian artists, watch 150 videos and access 2 online databases in an innovative approach to contemporary creativity.

MAXXI Architettura presents

15 December 2010 – 20 March 2011
Pier Luigi Nervi. Architecture as challenge.
ROME. GENIUS AND CONSTRUCTION

curated by Carlo Olmo, Roman section curated by Sergio Poretti and Tullia Iori

Cassius Clay raising his fists in victory beneath the dome of the Palazzo dello Sport, a gymnast on the rings as taut as the ribbing of the Palazetto at the EUR and a delightful Grace Kelly together with Nervi, stunned by the beauty of the construction. These are the images that open the exhibition Pier Luigi Nervi. Architecture as challenge. ROME. GENIUS AND CONSTRUCTION, devoted to the great Italian master. In particular, the exhibition will be exploring the works built for the 1960 Rome Olympics of which the fiftieth anniversary is being celebrated this year.

15 December 2010 – 6 March 2011
MAXXI. CANTIERE D’AUTORE
A photographic story

curated by Francesca Fabiani
20 gazes to capture the changes, 20 photographers to describe the birth, growth and completion of the greatest Italian contemporary museum. A non-conventional picture story at MAXXI: from the photographs from 2004 documenting the site excavations for the MAXXI foundations to the evocative aerial views taken in 2009 with the completed museum.
