A synopsis from the curatorial concept
The individual choice, how to reformulate memory and the strategies about how to forget will be common denominators for the curatorial concept and the invited artworks to this year’s October Salon. The exhibition will visualize the conceptual statement through a selection of relevant international works of well established as well as upcoming artist. In a sensitive, documentary and philosophical way it will focus on recent global history narrations parallel to the recent history in the Balkan region. We hope that the exhibition will contribute to an extended discussion, about the fact that incidents are seldom isolated but rather recurrent in history, the reconstruction of the past and the individual memory.
The curators of the 51st October Salon, Johan Pousette and Celia Prado were the curators of the Biennial of Contemporary Art in Gothenburg in 2009.
Johan Pousette, (1962) lives and works in Stockholm. He is currently working as a curator in The Swedish Traveling Exhibitions. From 2001 to 2005 he curated the solo exhibitions of the following artists: Bill Viola, Patty Chang, Alfredo Jaar, Mats Hjelm, Katarzya Kozyra, Zarina Bhimji and Fiona Tan. The new productions: William Kentridge, Jan Hafstrom, Jessica Stockholder, Jårg Geismar, Adrian Paci, Yane Calovski, Alexander Gutke, Henrik Andersson, Annika von Hausswolff. From 2001 to 2007 he was the artistic director of the Baltic Art Centre, and from 2003 to 2005 he worked with the National Government Assignment for Contemporary Art in Sweden.
Celia Prado lives and works in Stockholm and Visby, Sweden. She is currently working as a curator at The swedish Traveling Exhibitions. From 1998 to 2009, she curated the solo exhibitions of the following artists: Kutlug Ataman, Candize Breitz, Chris Cunningham, Amar Kanwar, Eva Koch, Susan Hiller, Tracey Moffatt, Shirin Neshat, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook Diana Thater, Salla Tykkä. New commisions: Amit Goren, Mats Hjelm, Eva Koch, Ma Liuming, Stig Sjölund, Julian Opie, Ulf Rolloff, Mark Wallinger, Magnus Wallin. From 1998 to 2004 she was one of the co -founders and senior curator at Tensta Konsthall and from 2004 to 2008 first curator of contempory art at The National Museum of Antiquities and curator at Bildmuseet, Umeå. She worked in various positions asigned by the Swedish National Government in the field of Contemporary Art.
In the framework of the 51st Salon, the Cultural Center of Belgrade will realize for the first time in collaboration with the NGOs, the alternative art collectives and individuals, a number of educational and parallel programs.

The October Art Salon is a representative event featuring actual tendencies in the domain of visual arts, founded under the auspices of the City of Belgrade. It was established in 1960 as an exhibition of the best works in the sphere of fine arts. The City of Belgrade and the Council of the October salon decided in 2004, to turn this manifestation into an international event.
