Master’s program in Curating including art, management and law

The International MA in Curating Art at Stockholm University specialises in an innovative combination of theory and practice together with professional competence development in practical curatorial work, arts management and law, in a configuration that is unusual in comparison to similar courses internationally. The course is delivered within a distinctive, research-led academic environment, enhanced by the inauguration in 2019 of Accelerator, the university’s newly founded exhibition space, operating at the nexus of contemporary art, science and social issues. We welcome applications from individuals from a broad range of academic and disciplinary fields and backgrounds, as well as those with commensurate curatorial and artistic experience.

We provide an education that encourages creativity and innovation. Simultaneously fostering an awareness of the traditions and responsibilities of working, both within museums and institutions, whilst also bridging these modes of working to more independent and alternative contexts and environments. The programme is attentive to the student’s individual focus, and participants are encouraged to develop their own research interests and profiles.

Curating Art is a full-time Master’s programme offered by the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, in collaboration with the disciplines Business, Administration and Law. The course faculty consists of representatives of these fields, as well as directors, curators and practitioners at leading art institutions in Stockholm, including Moderna Museet, Magasin III and Artipelag, as well as Index – The Swedish Foundation for Contemporary Art, Tensta Konsthall, Art Lab Gnesta, Marabouparken and Färgfabriken. External contributors regularly include artists, critics, curators and scholars practising in Sweden and internationally.

The programme spans over a two-year period and consists of theoretical courses, practical production projects, a ten-week internship in Sweden or abroad, and a final examination including a thesis and an independent curatorial project. The teaching takes many forms: lectures, seminars, and supervised work both individually and in groups. Furthermore, each student is provided individual mentoring from a professional curator associated with the programme, together with personal supervision for both final thesis and curatorial projects.
