Eliasson is an internationally acclaimed artist whose numerous exhibitions and projects have taken place in venues from London and New York to Kanazawa and Sydney. He has carried out several interventions in public space, including Erosion, through Johannesburg in 1997; Green river, in various cities between 1998 and 2001; and The New York City Waterfalls, commissioned by Public Art Fund in 2008. Many of his works have explored the relationships between space, body, and time.
Innen Stadt Außen concerns itself closely with these themes, as well as with the relationships between museum and cities, architecture and landscape. The exhibition, which includes new installations especially for the space, capitalizes on Berlin’s status as a site of constant change, uniquely open to experiments with architecture and urban structure. The site-specific investigations within the museum are amplified and examined through various ephemeral projects in public space, linking the Martin-Gropius-Bau to outer points within the city.
The exhibition is curated by Daniel Birnbaum, art critic, curator and Rector of the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, and its associated contemporary exhibition space Portikus. In 2009 he was Director of the 53rd Venice Biennale. He has been engaged in a longstanding collaboration with Eliasson in the fields of publications, exhibitions and projects in public space, going back to the 1990s. Innen Stadt Außen is their most ambitious cooperation to date.
