The Iaspis Forum On Design and Critical Practice has comprised an exhibition, an international seminar and now a publication; The Reader, on investigative, speculative and critically oriented design. The project has derived from the exhibition Forms of Inquiry: The Architecture of Critical Graphic Design, initiated and produced by the Architectural Association, London 2007. The Reader is based on four conversations between graphic designers about various aspects of design relating to their practices. It also contains a number of interviews and other texts linked to these conversations, and a broader discussion about design and transboundary practice.

“… The Reader is one of three parts in the project Iaspis Forum On Design and Critical Practice. After deciding to stage the exhibition Forms of Inquiry: The Architecture of Critical Graphic Design, we felt it would be a good idea to supplement it by means of a seminar and a book. We wanted a chance to present and discuss design in greater depth as an investigative, speculative and critical practice. As part of the Iaspis mandate to promote international exchange, we saw this as an interesting way to create an international forum for encounters and discussions.” – Magnus Ericson

“This publication is a fragment of the fourth constellation of Forms of Inquiry: The Architecture of Critical Graphic Design, a travelling exhibition staged within the Iaspis Forum on Design and Critical Practice. This volume is intended to function not merely as a form of documentation but as a means of taking the investigations where they can’t go in a gallery or seminar; thereby placing a special emphasis on reading and writing over the visual register of the exhibition’s content. In so doing this book expands upon the themes behind Forms of Inquiry and captures a set of conversations initiated for this publication. These conversations attempt to expand rather than mandate the possible realities of critical practice.” – Zak Kyes
