Applications for Fine Arts programs

The Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm is now open for applications to its five-year Fine Arts, and Master’s programs.

The Royal Institute of Art is a leading art institution in higher education located in Stockholm, with a long artistic tradition dating back to 1735, offering an unparalleled combination of artistic breadth and excellence. This is a place that enables art and learning. We experiment and take artistic risks in pursuit of growth. Professional artists teach fine art here—from print-making, painting and sculpture to video, sound, photography, interactive techniques, performance and critical studies. 

Our campus is located on Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm. The combination of buildings with a clear historical connection and modern workshops creates a dynamic environment for students, researchers and staff. Here, artistic heritage is preserved while new techniques and methods in the field are constantly being developed. The Royal Institute of Art is characterized in a similar way, both by its tradition and ongoing renewal.

The students’ artistic work is at the center of all learning. Through a collaborative process of thoughtful reflection, various forms of artistic expressions are heightened and enhanced by coming into contact with each other. A vast range of different aesthetics, attitudes and approaches are accommodated amongst our 230 students. Our education and research utilize and form a joint field of knowledge in constant evolution. The desire for experimentation and critical discussion pushes independent artistic development forward. 

Artistic practice is at the core of our education and research. We let different artistic and pedagogical tendencies play off each other. This happens through generosity and curiosity, reflection and intellectual respect, and experimentation. Our education and research create a force-field around the deepening and development of art. An open and inclusive stance towards the outside world creates a fluid, dynamic and independent institution in dialogue with its contemporary surroundings. We are an art school that dares to take artistic risks and continue to develop the expressions, methods and contexts of art.

At the Royal Institute of Art, the subjects are divided into four areas, each with a different inclination. The two-dimensional (2D) subject-area contains painting and print-making. The three-dimensional (3D) subject-area includes sculpture and 3D-design. Mindepartementet is the name of the platform where we have gathered together moving-images, photography, sound and performance. In the field of architecture and critical studies, we carry out teaching in art theory, art history and literary composition, with a focus on lifelong learning.

Our students move freely between the different fields of study, and choose what they want to immerse themselves in based on the rich palette of courses and materials on offer. There are no restrictions here, but we encourage everyone who wants to explore several different fields to acquire a broad knowledge of the expressions and materials found within that artistic discipline. Our cross-disciplinary work takes place not only through exchanges and dialogues between our own different areas of study, but also in our external collaborations with related areas within culture, science and the community.

Each student has an experienced artist as a tutor, and together they plan the program of study. Work in studios and workshops is combined with courses, group-critiques, lectures, field trips and exhibitions. An international perspective permeates the education at the Royal Institute of Art. We invite international guest teachers, arrange international workshops and seminars, and encourage study-trips abroad as well as foreign-exchange opportunities to study abroad.
