THE FAIR

From 6 to 8 November 2009, Artissima, The Interntional Contemporary Art Fair in Turin, will be held for the sixteenth time. The last two adopted a markedly international outlook and introduced innovative cultural proposals that went well beyond the traditional fair.

Artissima 16 will include 127 galleries from all over the world along with 18 emerging artists selected by a team of curators – Aurélie Voltz, Jimena Acosta Romero, Adam Carr and Simone Menegoi – for Present Future, the special section of the fair devoted to emerging talents.

Many important art galleries in Italy and abroad will be coming to Turin for the first time, or making a return, showing how they appreciate Artissima’s policies: inflexibility in terms of quality of the exhibitors, the decision to have a small fair focused entirely on contemporary research, and great diversification in terms of events.

Other curated projects in the fair will include Constellations, a museum-type exhibition of large size artworks selected by Heike Munder, “THE STORE”, by Adam Carr, a sort of mixture between a store and an exhibition, where it will be possible to buy multiples by young artists for a few euros and Artissima Cinema, a video program on historical and contemporary performances organized by Yann Chateigné Tytelman and RoseLee Goldberg.

THE THEATRE PROJECT

ACCECARE L’ASCOLTO / AVEUGLER L’ECOUTE / BLINDING THE EARS
ACTION, BEHAVIOUR, PERFORMANCE, INSTANT THEATER IN TURIN
Concept and Curating: Andrea Bellini

This year, Artissima will for the first time present an accompanying programme of events, under the title Accecare l’ascolto / Aveugler l’écoute / Blinding the ears, focusing on a single theme: interaction between the visual arts and theatre.

From 4 to 8 November, world-premiere events – from plays to performances and concerts – will take place in five famous Turin theatres. An extraordinary line-up of international artists of different generations will take part in the project – key figures in this borderline area between “theatre” and “art”, such as Pablo Bronstein, Steven Claydon, Guy de Cointet, Cao Fei, Gelitin, Flavia Mastrella and Antonio Rezza, Matt Mullican, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Jimmy Raskin, Jim Shaw, Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan, Erik and Harald Thys, Nico Vascellari, Tris Vonna-Michell, and Bedwyr Williams.

Curatorial advisors: Defne Ayas, Andrea Busto, Yann Chateigné Tytelman, Luigi Coppola, Cecilia Canziani, Ilaria Gianni, Simone Menegoi, Davide Quadrio, Caterina Riva, Francesco Stocchi, Aurélie Voltz, and Catherine Wood.

Advance tickets will be available for purchase from 5 October on the Artissima website.

The Cao Fei event is produced by Depart Foundation, Rome, in collaboration with Artissima and Arthub, Shanghai, and in co-production with Far East Far West ltd., Hong Kong, Shanghai.

The Bedwyr Williams event is produced by Nomas Foundation, Rome.

The Theatre project is made possible thanks to Fondazione del Teatro Stabile di Torino, Fondazione Teatro Regio di Torino and Fondazione Teatro Piemonte Europa.

Artissima, a brand-name event of Regione Piemonte, Provincia di Torino and Città di Torino, is promoted by Fondazione Torino Musei. The Fair has the support of Camera di commercio di Torino, Compagnia di San Paolo and Fondazione CRT, as well as UniCredit Group – UniCredit Private Banking together with illycaffè and Nationale Suisse.
