Art discoveries at the BERLINER LISTE 09: the experimental space for emerging galleries and contemporary art
Berlin is among the world’s most vibrant art centers. For years now, young artists of all styles have gathered here in search of new concepts and unconventional methods beyond the establishment. The BERLINER LISTE represents this scene. Since its foundation six years ago by the Berlin gallery owner Wolfram Völcker, this innovative convention for discoverers has provided “the” platform for fresh, contemporary art.
The BERLINER LISTE gives newcomers a chance. The uncomplicated and communicative atmosphere of the convention allows for a lively exchange between artists, galleries and interested audiences. With this concept and since the success of its jubilee in 2008 with around fifteen thousand visitors, the BERLINER LISTE has become Berlin’s second largest art fair after the Art Forum.
BERLINER LISTE 09 at a new location in the Palais am Tiergarten
Part of what makes the BERLINER LISTE special is the annually changing, yet always remarkable location. In 2009, with around 60 international exhibitors, the BERLINER LISTE has once again discovered a new temporary location for art: The Palais am Tiergarten. Close to the Neue Nationalgalerie, the modern glass building at Reichpietschufer has a huge atrium and offers a sensational view of Berlin from the top floor. On four floors, the BERLINER LISTE invites visitors to stroll around and discover current artistic work and to engage in discussions with artists and gallery owners. For the Opening Party, the legendary Berlin nightclub Cookies transforms the vitreous top floor into a vibrant sky lounge.
BERLINER LISTE 09
focuses on contemporary art from Spain and the Eastern European art scene
The BERLINER LISTE 09 is more international than ever before. 60 galleries from 14 countries will present their most promising talents to collectors, curators, enthusiasts and media from all over the world. Half of the galleries exhibiting are based in Germany, the other half is from other European countries, the USA and South Korea.
This year’s BERLINER LISTE bring the Spanish art scene into focus: The thomas punzmann gallery from Marbella is once again participating, showing works by Bernd Zimmer and Juan Béjar, who were already able to generate high sales revenues in 2008. The 3 Punts Galeria from Barcelona also had a very successful exhibition at the BERLINER LISTE in 2008, and among the artists presented this year are Javier Aguilera and his “Manga Series Sculptures” as well as Paola de Grenet with her series “Albino Beauty”. Alongside young positions, the stand will be showing selected Polaroids by the renowned photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, which were recently part of an exhibition at the Whitney Museum in New York. New participants include the MiTO Gallery from Barcelona and the Son Espace Gallery from Palafrugell.
Another emphasis in 2009 is contemporary art from Eastern Europe: The Anaid Art Gallery from Romania will participate again this year, while the KROKUS Galéria from Slovakia and the Photon Gallery from Slovenia will join us for the first time. Gallery Bastejs from Latvia will present the latest artistic trends and tendencies from their country.
Photography at the BERLINER LISTE 09
The BERLINER LISTE 2009 places particular emphasis on photography. A total of seven galleries will exclusively and collectively show photography at this year’s convention. In addition, the Peter Christian Schlüschen Foundation will once again support young talent with the Prize for Sports Photography. Already awarded a number of times, the 10,000 Euro prize is among the most generous photography awards in Germany.
