Turps Banana Painting Magazine, Issue 6 OUT NOW

“There’s a ‘slowness’ to her figures, a mellowness that is deeply comforting. Her oversized hands with their many fat dough-like thumbs are the parts of the painting that apparently gave Cook the most pleasure” Dan Coombs on Beryl Cook for Turps Banana, 2009

For the art world Beryl Cook remains ‘off limits’, this is because her work is not ‘progressive’. In Issue 6 of Turps Banana painting magazine Dan Coombs breaks the ultimate taboo to explore her.

Also in this issue:

Turps Banana is delighted to publish the last interview with American heavyweight Leon Golub. This thought provoking interview is a must for any painter interested in how this artist maintained and was inspired by the pursuit of the image against the roaring background of New York abstract expressionism.

Jeffrey Dennis resurrects the force that was Feliks Topolski in a fascinating portrait of the painter and draughtsman. The Polish refugee who fled the Nazi’s, hobnobbed with Picasso, flirted with royalty and developed an inimitable biting graphic style to describe the eminent statesmen of his era.

Also in this new issue are Andy Holden’s interview with Jim Shaw during his recent show with Simon Lee Gallery in London, the second instalment of Tom Phillips ‘biography of a painting’, Jason Sumray on octagenarian and Japanese POW survivor Ron Delavigne and Neal Tait on Simon Ling.

Plus more reviews, the cartoon by David Rayson and images from the Turps Banana painting show in Bologna.

As ever, an issue filled with the most divergent practices both in London and worldwide.

ISSUE 6 IS NOW AVAILABLE from major art publication retailers, and by subscription from www.turpsbanana.com

Turps Banana is a revolutionary new art magazine. This full colour magazine concentrates exclusively on painting and is written by practicing painters. Uniquely the editorial remit carries a no advertising policy so there is no distraction from the ranging debate about contemporary painting.
