Etant donnés: The French-American Fund for Contemporary Art offers financial support in the form of grants to projects in the fields of visual arts, architecture and design.

The project grants are allocated to:

American nonprofit institutions organizing exhibitions, installations, artist residencies, publications, or other projects involving living French artists.

French nonprofit institutions presenting the same types of projects with living American artists.

Established in 1994 by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, CulturesFrance and the Délégation aux Arts Plastiques, in partnership with FACE (French American Cultural Exchange), and with generous support from the Florence Gould Foundation, the Fund has distributed nearly 2 million dollars to support over 200 projects for major American and French cultural institutions.

Since 2005, Etant Donnés also awards Curatorial Research Grants to support the professional development of American curators by offering them extended stays in France for research projects in the field of contemporary art. The objective of the grants is to facilitate the discovery of new talent in the curatorial field , to reinforce interest in emerging and established contemporary artists, and to encourage the exploration of France’s cultural resources. (Eligible projects include research on exhibitions or publications, travel to specific sites and collections, as well as an intensive reading and/or writing period) .

These grants are allocated to curators and scholars who must be U.S. citizens, or legal residents of the United States for the past five years. The candidates must have a minimum of three years of research or professional experience in the field, and should be currently employed by a nonprofit art institution, or have a specific project in collaboration with it.

Grants are awarded through an open competition administered by the Etant donnés Fund. Applications are reviewed by the Etant donnés Artistic Committee, composed of prominent curators, art critics and arts administrators.

Complete applications are due by April 15th (extended deadline) for projects beginning after June 1st. Incomplete applications will be disqualified.
