This year, the International Art Show will take place from Thursday, 24 September, to Sunday, 27 September (opening: Wednesday, 23 September) and thus ideally starts the season of the European art fairs in autumn.

Each year, about 44,000 art collectors, museum directors, artists, curators, art dealers and art lovers from all over the world attend art forum berlin. 1,700 media representatives from 36 countries report on the latest offers of the International Art Show.

The Selection Committee, newly appointed by art forum berlin, will decide on the admission of the approximately 140 international galleries. Its members are Bärbel Grässlin (Galerie Bärbel Grässlin, Frankfurt), Mehdi Chouakri (Galerie Mehdi Chouakri, Berlin), José Freire (team gallery, New York), Georg Kargl (Georg Kargl Fine Arts, Vienna), Nicky Verber (Herald St, London), and Paolo Zani (ZERO…, Milan). This week, some of the leading Berlin galleries have announced they will apply for art forum berlin. The deadline for applying for the International Art Show is 25 February, 2009.

This year’s art forum berlin has several novelties to offer. Thus in the sector galleries, in addition to the galleries for contemporary art, a number of galleries will be admitted which present art since the sixties. With this expansion of what the exhibition offers – without detracting from the main emphasis on contemporary art – the International Art Show is to be designed in a more diverse way and therefore more attractive and more interesting for the visitors.

The sectors focus (formerly Freestyle) permits young galleries that have not been in existence for more than 5 years to be present at low costs. In choosing these galleries, the Selection Committee is assisted by two experts Robert Meijer (Lüttgenmeijer, Berlin) and Jocelyn Wolff (Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Paris).

Furthermore, the International Art Show is launching the sector plein air for the presentation of installations and sculptures in the summer garden of the Palais am Funkturm.

The presentation of cultural institutions and international art magazines supplements the exhibition programme. In addition, panel discussions will be held with leading personalities from the international world of art.

During art forum berlin, the Berlin museums, galleries and private art institutions will present a varied programme of high-quality exhibitions. Exclusive receptions and events will be further attractive features and meeting points.
