MIART 2009: PRESTIGIOUS NAMES JOIN THE NEW SELECTION COMMITTEE
Quality the byword at the 14th Milan Fair, scheduled for 17–20 April 2009

The 14th MiArt, Milan’s International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, will be opening its doors from 17 through 20 April 2009, with the invitation-only inauguration scheduled for the 16th. This particularly important edition is being put together by an organization team made up of a new project manager, Alessandro Cappello, two new curators for the Contemporary section, Giacinto di Pietrantonio and Luca Cerizza, and Donatella Volontà, who’s overseeing the prestigious Modern section. Continuing with the policy applied so scrupulously last year, MiArt is focusing more than ever on achieving the highest quality levels through the scrupulous selection of participating galleries, all of which must be of proven professionalism. It’s the job of the almost fully overhauled Selection Committee to assess the exhibition submissions. Its members are gallery operators Emi Fontana, Giangi Fonti, Epicarmo Invernizzi, Federico Luger, Francesca Minini, Mauro Nicoletti, Mimmo Scognamiglio and Giulio Tega. A new role will be played by Laura Garbarino as the contact person for Italian and international collectors.

The experience and professionalism of these new people represent a major investment in the strategy to further grow MiArt. This strategy was widely applauded in 2008 and, for the 2009 show, will continue to step up and reinforce the Fair’s role on the art market. Quality, and not quantity, is therefore the byword at this year’s MiArt, which will see the disappearance of the Anteprima section, devoted to newly established galleries, which will become an integral part of the Contemporary section, held in a single pavilion. This where the established names of today’s art scene come together with the most promising rising stars – names that the most experimental galleries will be investing in. The other MiArt pavilion will be handed over to the Modern section, made up of the most prestigious Italian and international galleries exhibiting works of enormous qualitative and cultural interest to the Milan art market, which boasts collectors from all over the world.

As a part of the new image coordinated by Pierluigi Cerri, the Fair’s fixturing is also getting an overhaul. Last year Cerri brought his vision of essential elegance to the pavilions. This year he’ll be placing an even greater emphasis on showcasing both the works and the artists, some of whom create spaces and meeting places at the Fair that are defined by their works.

The program of events organized parallel to MiArt is also particularly rich thanks to the collaboration of the Commune and Province of Milan, the Lombardy Region and Iulm University. Events include exhibitions, conferences, happenings, performances and walks dedicated to contemporary art, including Miraggi (Mirages). About to the presented for the second time, Miraggi has become a key opportunity to champion modern and contemporary art in the city as an open air museum through striking works displayed in Milan’s most beautiful and prestigious locations, including Piazza Scala, Piazzetta Reale, Via Dante and other historical sites.

Finally, the 14th MiArt is offering participating galleries and artists another important new feature. Thanks to the Associazione Amici di MiArt, from 2009 the International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair will have an art investment fund. A not-for-profit undertaking, the Association will support and promote contemporary art through the purchase of works on display at MiArt for display in public places around Milan. The founding members of the Association are Fondazione Fiera Milano, Fiera Milano SPA, Fiera Milano International, the Milan Chamber of Commerce, the Lombardy Region, the Commune of Milan and Banca Popolare di Milano. Other institutional members will soon be joining.
