New scholarship
The MA Curatorial Practice program at the School of Visual Arts is pleased to announce a special scholarship addressing underrepresented practitioners in the curatorial field, with a special focus of interest on social justice and equity. The scholarship is for new applicants intending to commence their studies in the fall semester of 2021.

Two new curatorial workshops
As well, we are pleased to announce two new curatorial workshops beginning this coming fall that will focus on topics of intersectional interest, seeking to consider region, politics, gender, race, contemporary and historical cultures, and contextual consonances of difference in project-based curatorial work.

Global online summer intensive
MA Curatorial Practice is also joining in a special partnership with the University of Gothenburg’s HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design in a global online summer intensive focused on the philosophy and politics of friendship, with an extraordinary group of guest philosophers, anthropologists, artists, and writers—among them, Céline Condorelli, Simon Critchley, Yuk Hui, Walter Mignolo, Sarah Pierce, Elizabeth Povinelli, Sibyl Schwarzenbach, Shuddhabrata Sengupta, and others to be announced.

MA Curatorial Practice Program in New York City
MA Curatorial Practice is a program dedicated to hands-on training and academic excellence, along with international fieldwork and internships hosted by leading curators in major institutions throughout the world. Our state-of-the-art space in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood is close to hundreds of galleries and museums, from the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the New Museum, to the Kitchen, the Drawing Center, and many others. Our students have opportunities to produce curatorial projects in New York and beyond. Our graduates go on to curatorial jobs across the globe.

Our faculty
The program’s faculty and faculty at large include major curators, institution leaders, critics, and theorists, both New York–based and international, including Sofía Hernandez Chong Cuy, Clémentine Deliss, Thierry de Duve, Álvaro Rodríguez Fominaya, David Frankel, Chrissie Iles, Hou Hanru, Daniel Kunitz, Maria Lind, Steven Henry Madoff, Laurel Ptak, Sara Raza, Sara Reisman, Charles Renfro, David A. Ross, Noam Segal, Roddy Schrock, Terry Smith, Lumi Tan, Mick Wilson, Keith Whitmoyer, and Brian Kuan Wood.

Courses and network
Our Curatorial Roundtable includes approximately 60 international curators for individual sessions with our students—sessions that have turned into internships, project work, and jobs. These meetings offer our students a broad range of approaches to curating and the opportunity to build a professional network. As well, the program offers meetings with artists, courses in practical training for curating across media formats, programming for institutions, collecting strategies, and considerations of non-exhibitionary curatorial projects, along with sessions with experts in lighting and exhibition design, grant writing, conservation, presentation-making, and several workshops in writing. Courses in exhibition history, art history, theory, and philosophy add depth to the practical training in the program. Our coursework addresses social equity, inclusiveness, and the rethinking of traditional art-historical and exhibitionary canons. Fieldwork with the program includes a subsidized trip to a major international biennial prior to our international internships.

Our students produce curatorial projects in our own space and in other venues, all subsidized by the program. As MA Curatorial Practice is part of one of the largest art schools in the US, our students can take advantage of the remarkable facilities at SVA and the range of students to work with across many disciplines, undergraduate and graduate. Students often take on work within the New York art world and its unparalleled density of artists, galleries, and museums.

These experiences in the two years of courses and hands-on training truly prepare graduates to enter the professional world, gaining jobs in both small and large institutions. We offer the place and time to expand your thinking and skills as a curator, with an esteemed international faculty in one of the great centers of art in the world.
