Libera Accademia di Belle Arti (LABA) in Brescia and Nomadica – experimental and artist cinema network are pleased to launch a new curatorial project with a pedagogy that aims to identify new and stronger links between the arts and teaching and between cultural dissemination and collective reflection. The first event will be online: a weekly publication of film programs, video essays, conversations, live streams, podcasts and documents.

Laboratory for experimental and artist cinema
In 2021, Nomadica has been enthusiastically invited by LABA to develop a pedagogical path on moving image arts and experimental film.
In its 11 years of activity, Nomadica has promoted the diffusion and rethinking of experimental cinema in Italy through screenings, seminars, workshops, and online events. These years of activities constitute one unique, large, ongoing permanent laboratory dedicated to the research of moving images and film as an art form, approaching them as transversal, border-crossing media.
This work has allowed Nomadica to produce and discover films, get to know artists both on a national and international scale, engage with long-term collaborations, and cultivate a thriving network. Community is the lifeblood of Nomadica, made up of filmmakers, studio artists, curators, musicians, writers, and intellectuals from all backgrounds. They live and breathe cinema, not as a succession of standardized historiographies and narratives but as a multitude of cognitive, aesthetic, and intellectual experiences that flow into our lives from the screen.
In light of this, Nomadica is responding to LABA’s invitation with the Laboratory for experimental and artist cinema, a curatorial project with a pedagogy that aims to identify new links between the arts, teaching, cultural dissemination, and collective thinking.
The first event will be held online on April 21 with the publication of a series of video essays and podcasts, commissioned from Italian and international artists and curators, and dedicated to specific practices and case studies. These research studies on the cultural models of contemporary and international cinema will be accompanied by a proposal of heterogeneous materials: streaming programs of artists’ films, interviews, and oral histories.
This Laboratory is a collective and polyvocal proposal intended not only to introduce LABA students to experimental practices in cinema but to also participate in what seems to us to be, on an international level, a real debate on contemporary artists’ cinema, on its ways of existing and operating individually, collectively and systemically.
In launching this permanent laboratory, Nomadica seeks to underline that, on a local and national level, it is no longer enough to be able to show films and turn our gaze in the direction of a screen; we need to direct our gaze towards the light cone of the projector, towards the artists and their practices.
