Kuvan Kevät, the annual master’s degree show of University of the Arts Helsinki’s (Uniarts Helsinki) Academy of Fine Arts, will once again be organised at the end of the spring term. Kuvan Kevät 2021 introduces works by 46 visual artists who are about to graduate from the four subject areas of the Academy of Fine Arts: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, and Time and Space Arts.

“Compared to the past few years, this year’s exhibition includes fewer paintings. On the other hand, there is an abundance of sculptures and spatial art”, says Sakari Tervo, Lecturer in Exhibition Studies.

Preparations for the exhibition have been underway for the entire year in the shadow of the pandemic. Fortunately, thanks to the restrictions that came into effect earlier in the spring, the anguish caused by the pandemic has gradually subsided both in Helsinki and the entire metropolitan area, and we are delighted to be able to open the exhibition to the public.

The exhibition is organised in three galleries in the centre of Helsinki. Exhibition Laboratory and Project Room are the regular galleries of the Academy of Fine Arts, and a temporary gallery space has been set up next to the Exhibition Laboratory. You can also visit the exhibition in a virtual environment: an online gallery will be launched soon after the opening of the exhibition.

Master’s programme in fine arts
The MFA programme in fine arts at the Uniarts Helsinki encourages students to find their own strengths, expression methods, and interests within the field of fine arts. Students acquire skills and knowledge that will enable them to work independently as visual artists and understand their own work as a part of the context of contemporary art and society, where artists may adopt multifaceted roles and profiles.

Students at Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts have the flexibility to pursue their own personal aspirations when selecting courses and planning their curriculum. Individual guidance and independent artistic work are integral to the studies. Students are encouraged to choose courses from subject areas other than their own and to engage in versatile artistic work using different media. We also encourage cross-disciplinary studies at the other academies of Uniarts Helsinki: the Sibelius Academy and Theatre Academy.

As well as first-class facilities and support, every student is provided with a workspace of their own. Students also have excellent opportunities to exhibit their work in public, thanks to the Academy’s own galleries, frequent public art projects and active cooperation with the local and international art scene. In 2021, the Academy and its exhibitions will move to a new building designed for studying art, situated in the vibrant, up-and-coming Sörnäinen district in Helsinki.

Next application period for the Master’s degree programme is in August 2021. Studies begin in January 2022.
