100 Dollar Projects
In spring 2021, Portland State University Art & Social Practice MFA students were each given 100 USD to commission someone to do something, anything. Projects included: buying candy for an entire elementary school; continuing an AGNES VARDA FOREVER poster project; retroactively compensating for a minute of building Black excellence; taking a nostalgic driving tour around Bed Stuy, Brooklyn; paying an anonymous woman surfer to go surfing for a week. This issue of Conversations on Everything, Social Forms of Art Journal comprises interviews between students and those they commissioned with 100 USD. Harrell Fletcher (director of the Art & Social Practice MFA program), who commissioned the commissions, discusses the class assignment that had far-reaching, multiplier effects. Read the issue at psusocialpractice.org/journal come June 4.

The Social Forms of Art (SoFA) Journal is a publication dedicated to supporting, documenting and contextualising social forms of art and its related fields and disciplines. The Journal supports and discusses projects that offer critique, commentary and context for a field that is active and expanding. Conversations on Everything is an ongoing collection of interviews produced as part of SoFA Journal. Interviews with artists, curators, people of other fields and everyday humans study social forms of art as a field that lives between and within both art and life.

Portland State University’s Art & Social Practice MFA program is a three-year, flexible residency program that combines individual research, group work, and experiential learning. The program’s blend of critical and professional practice, progressive pedagogy, collaborative social engagement, and transdisciplinary exploration produces an immersive educational environment.
