Grandeur
Unique tradition, legendary reputation

Arnhem, the Netherlands

www.sonsbeek2008.nl

Since 1949 Arnhem has built up a legendary reputation as one of the major international art events of Europe: the Sonsbeek sculpture exhibition. ‘Sonsbeek 2008: Grandeur’ is the 10th edition in a series that has featured well-known curators such as Saskia Bos, Valerie Smith and Jan Hoet. And, again, it stands for an original vision on developments in contemporary art. This Sonsbeek is pursuing in a new and innovative way the involvement of the public in art that seeks to be more than just art for the art world.

Artistic director Anna Tilroe has invited 28 outstanding artists from all continents to present their ideas about the pursuit of ‘Grandeur’. Specially for Sonsbeek 2008 they are creating a work of art that represents the striving for human greatness, based on a completely individual point of view.

The involvement of the public and the city acquires a unique form: before being installed in the beautiful, old surroundings of Sonsbeek Park, the works of art will be carried by the inhabitants of Arnhem through the old innercity in a solemn, but festive Procession on June 8.
