The most comprehensive book yet about the Egyptian-German artist Susan Hefuna was developed in the course of a close dialogue with the editor, Hans Ulrich Obrist. Hefuna has been working in the media of drawing, photography, installation and video since the early 1990s. She uses these various techniques to intertwine levels of meaning and reflect many-layered codes, which she interprets in both concrete and abstract manners.
Pars Pro Toto presents numerous new works by the versatile artist: Mashrabiya screens, vitrines on the streets of Cairo, masks, fabric works and drawings. Many of the Cairo works were created in workshops, on the street, or in private homes. From these recent works, the book traces an arc back to earlier video works by
the artist.
The interviews conducted by Hans Ulrich Obrist with Susan Hefuna and
Sudanese author Tayeb Salih are supplemented with poems by Syrian poet Adonis.
The work of Susan Hefuna, born in 1962, takes up everyday aspects of life with which she — through photography, video, drawing and digital media — explores the indeterminacy of location and identity and her negotiation of her own identity. Much of Hefuna’s work is informed by her dual heritage, which often features striking images of family, interior spaces and cityscapes in and around Cairo. Her work has been widely exhibited at such venues as Louvre, Paris; Townhouse Gallery, Cairo; Bluecoat Arts Centre, Liverpool; Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken; House of World Cultures, Berlin; The Third Line Gallery, Dubai; Biennale Bamako; Sharjah Biennale and many more.
The book in English and Arabic language is elaborately designed: embossed linen flexcover, a variety of fine papers, silver edging, each copy includes a bookmark, designed and handpainted by the artist.
