Volume Magazine #13: ‘AMBITION’
Out now!
VOLUME is a collaborative project by Archis + AMO + C-Lab + …
Architecture is defined by ambition. But this ambition is far from simple. It is never straightforward, never the singular drive it appears to be. Rather, it is a set of interacting forces in which often the means are mistaken for ends.
This issue of Volume presents a preliminary map of what has become a landscape of misguided purpose. It features a series of interviews in which the topic is investigated from different angles. Alejandro Zaera-Polo and Bjarke Ingels both talk about power and celebrity not as goals to attain but as means. Elizabeth Diller reminds us that it is reductive to think of ambition as the raw determination to achieve power or fame. Charles Jencks expresses his thoughts on the future of ambition, the pleasures of the critical, and where architecture is going. Momoyo Kaijima explains about Micro-Scales and Macro Ambition. Shohei Shigematsu and Mohsen Mostafavi discuss the ambitions of OMA NY, and current transformations in architectural practice. Interviews with Vincent Gallo, Thom Mayne, Kevin Roche, Philip Johnson, and Jerry Brown sound out the definitions and implications of ‘AMBITION’.
Essays, lectures and notes by Mark Wigley, Francesco Bonami, Sylvia Lavin, Keller Easterling, Natalie Jeremijenko, Arjen Oosterman and Yehuda E. Safran draw lines connecting the personal positions of the interviews to a larger context.
The second edition of the insert ‘Alibi’, this time dedicated to Kazakhstan, is included as a bonus.
With the release of ‘AMBITION’, Volume introduces a new format. Slightly smaller in size and thicker, it connects better to the direction Volume is exploring: research based, experimental and proactive. Easy to hold and handle, the new format improves readability.
Volume 13 was conceived and edited by C-Lab.
