Panel discussion Water, Sea and Sand
Making Art in the Caribbean
Monday, September 10, 6 PM
Free Admission
Artists Quisqueya Henríquez and Liset Castillo, and curators Gabriela Rangel
and Amy Rosenblum Martin.
Moderated by Holly Block, Director of The Bronx Museum of the Arts
Instead of showing the popular made-for-export representations from the Caribbean, Quisqueya Henríquez’s performances and photographs scrutinize the places and the environment that reflect deeper social issues. Yet, Henríquez’s work is very much informed by the Caribbean as a polymorphic cultural area where critiques to colonial power and any form of Orientalism were formulated. A growing number of artists such as Henríquez as well as Liset Castillo have taken the task to challenge ingrained stereotypes and reductive essentialisms. Members of this panel will discuss the culture of the Caribbean at large including the role of cities such as Miami or La Habana within this narrative.
