Over the last three years, the Institute of Contemporary Arts has worked with artist Tino Sehgal to present a series of exhibitions designed to work sequentially and within the specific context of the ICA. The resulting series of solo exhibitions, of which this is the third and final, have given both the institution and audiences a unique opportunity to chart the development of an artist, his practice and relationship to a particular institution. For the artist too, the experience of revisiting a space and presenting work to both a knowing (those who have followed his work over the three years) and unknowing audience has inspired a distinctive evolution and led to shows that engage with this sense of continuity.

For this trilogys final installment, Sehgal has conceived an ambitious new work which continues an interest in current sociological, political and cultural debate but this time within a radically open structure. Based on one principle rule, the situation can change at any moment and as interaction between participants is neither choreographed nor dramaturgically framed, there is a heightened sense of fluidity and self-expression inherent. As further emphasis of the openness or democratic nature of its framework, the work has two titles: This success or This failure and according to their perception of the situation, the participants can decide which title they attribute. Central to Sehgals artistic concerns is his interest in the creative and aesthetic formation of human action and relationships. In this piece he focuses on the social sphere of education as being both a central and essential aspect of society whereby human inter-relation is taught and formed.
Tino Sehgal was born in London in 1976 and currently lives in Berlin.
Tino Sehgal, 2005 2007 has been curated by Jens Hoffmann and is kindly supported by The Felix Trust for Art, London and The Goethe-Institut, London
