WHAT DUTY OF THE MUSEUM?:
AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE MUSEUM
Warsaw, 16 -18 March 2007
We have a pleasure to inform that the results of the international competition for the building which will house new Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw will be announced on the 26th of February 2007. One hundred and seventy eight architects from all over the world entered the competition.
All project designs will be presented during an post-competition exhibition (26th February to the18th March 2007).
This event will serve as a reason to organize an international conference which will give us an opportunity to introduce the project of the future Museum building within the context of the city and country architectural policy to the large group of our international colleagues as well as to discuss the program, profile and strategies of the new Museum: its future position within the contexts of the Polish, the European and the world cultural scenes.
The conference title What Duty of the Museum? refers to the discussion initiated in autumn 2005 at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin, during the meeting in the memory of Ryszard Stanislawski.
We invite our friends, future partners, museum directors, museum managers, architects and curators who are involved in the ongoing process of redefining the position of museum in changing societies to take part in the discussion and the conference.
After the conference – on the 17th and 18th of March 2007 – we organize optional short tours to the most interesting venues of the Polish art scene.

THE WARSAW MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
The Warsaw Museum of Modern Art is the major, most important and largest investment when it comes to modern and contemporary art in Poland since the end of World War II.
The Museum should be a place of the social dialogue and discussions reconsidering the role of culture and the visual arts within the process of transformation which is currently taking place in Central and Eastern Europe as well as in many other countries throughout the world.
The Museum is to be located near The Palace of Culture and Science considered a symbol of the 1950s, and is planned as an element of the new image of Warsaw – The City of Culture.
