From September 21 to October 20, 2007, the second Photo Festival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_ Heidelberg will be taking place in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area. Christoph Tannert, director of the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin has fortunately been acquired to serve as curator for 2007. Following the move of the International Photo Festival in Herten to Mannheim / Ludwigshafen and the successful new launch in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area in 2005, the festival in September 2007 will be newly structured under its new name Photo Festival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg.
The main theme for 2007, Reality Crossings gears in on current trends in the areas of photography and video, concentrating here on the documentary perspective. A genuine new launch for this tradition-rich project in terms of both content and concept is planned here. The Photo Festival should be an international photo event with exhibitions, reviews for photographers and professionals, theoretical discussion forums, workshops for children and the inclusion of public areas with large-scale photography by day and light installations at night. The themes to be treated, besides the current discourse on photography and modern image production also include video art and new media, amplified through media cross-over sub-cultural activities. The focal point of Reality Crossings is formed by the collision of different realities in art, in everyday life, in Germany and world-wide. What counts here is the socially interested vantage point, which documents, perceives the testimony of the times and illuminates the context of things as they come into being.
