Presenting postgraduate research projects from both our 2020 and 20201 cohorts.

Plymouth College of Art is home to a distinctive postgraduate community run by artists and designers, for artists and designers. It is a dynamic, creative and collaborative space of thinking and making, allied to networks of cultural, commercial and industrial practitioners, businesses and institutions which offer the opportunity to engage, exhibit, curate and publish both here and abroad.

Graduate work has emerged from a background of challenging circumstances and students have shown immense resilience and creativity in their responses, as they critically engage with the creative, cultural, technological and economic changes that are shaping our world.

Featuring painting, drawing, installation, moving image, design, glass and ceramics, Plymouth College of Art’s MA Summer Show Open will present postgraduate research projects undertaken within our specialist community of practice from both our 2020 and 20201 cohorts.

The exhibition will take place in Plymouth College of Art’s Studio 11 building, just a few minutes walk from the main campus, open to the public Friday, September 10 until Thursday, September 16, 10am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 2pm Saturday.

“This has been an extraordinary year for all students and graduates, where the normal challenges in a given year have been compounded by a global pandemic, entrenched political systems and redundant or failing socio-economic practices. I can think of no one better placed to seek solutions to this than then our graduating Masters Students, the next generation of creative practitioners.” –Dr Steven Paige, Subject Leader for Postgraduate Studies, Plymouth College of Art.

The MA show 2021 will feature work from across our MA programmes, including Disruptive Design, Fine Art, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Illustration, Photography, Ceramics, Textile Design, Creative Education, Visual Communication and Entrepreneurship for Creative Practice.

You are invited to explore our creative postgraduate community of thinkers, makers and researchers – big on collaboration and innovation and a hotbed of emerging talent.  If you would like to know more about any of our Masters programmes, join us at our upcomin postgraduate open day on September 11, from 10am to 12:30pm.

About Plymouth College of Art
“The entire object of true education is to make people… not merely learned, but to love knowledge—not merely just, but to hunger and thirst after justice.” –John Ruskin, The Crown of Wild Olive: Four Lectures on Industry and War (1882)

Founded in 1856, Plymouth College of Art provides a fertile, challenging and intellectual environment with outstanding technical resources, for postgraduate students who want to transform their professional horizons and to respond positively to the critical issues facing contemporary society.

The college’s postgraduate courses offer critical and technical expertise in a range of disciplines, including MA Creative Education: Making Learning, a platform for experimental approaches to creative pedagogy, MA Craft and Material Practices and MA by Research. Postgraduate students at Plymouth College of Art are proactive researchers into practice and transformative and agenda-changing professionals who contribute to the future of the creative and cultural industries, with a focus on community and social impacts.

All of the college’s awards are supported by a focused research culture, including two biennial international conferences: Making Futures, exploring artisanal craft in an expanded field, and Making Learning, a crucible for open inquiry through arts education. Embedding postgraduate study within a practice-led research culture, the Postgraduate Centre hosts cross-disciplinary talks and student exhibitions which form an integral part of our commitment to experimental creative practice and research.
