On 23.02.2005 Emergency Biennale in Chechnya was organized both in Grozny, Chechnya, and in Paris, Palais de Tokyo, site de création contemporaine.
Wishing to reintroduce Chechnya to an international audience while reacting to the phenomenon of proliferation of the international biennales, Emergency Biennale in Chechnya has been conceived in a geopolitical context which has become so complex that it seemed urgent and necessary to mobilize the artists.
A part of the concept involved a call to the artists from all over the world to create works in a double exemplary likely to fit in a suitcase for Chechnya (cared by a local partner), the other one for a touring exhibition around the world.
On 23.02.2006, after Paris, then Brussels (Matrix Art Project, September), Bolzano (EURAC/ Museion, October), and Milano (Isola Art Centre, November), the itinerant exhibition of Emergency Biennale in Chechnya stops in Riga, Latvia, at the upcoming Riga City Exhibition Hall.
A stop in Riga, Latvia, represents a significant aspect of the project as to involve this region in activating the public opinion and human memory.
On this occasion, Ieva Kalnina, curator and director of the Riga City Exhibition Hall Project invited the local artists to participate.
16 artists accepted and realized new specific works: Aija Apse, Aija Bleja, Kristians Brekte, Kaspars Goba, Martins Grauds, Andris Grinbergs, Uldis Jancis, Edgars Jurjans, Elina Kalnina, Romans Korovins, Linards Kulless, Raimonds Licitis, Una Meiberga, Gatis Rozenfelds, Kriss Salmanis, Aiva Zurina.
A Forum Opening will offer the opportunity to discuss the problems concerning Caucasus situation with local and Russian contributors.
Invited persons: LR Minister for Integration Ainars Latkovskis, the poet Uldis Berzins, the journalists Atis Klimovics, Sandijs Semjonovs and Pavel Shirov.
