Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, Auckland New Zealand
Curator, Contemporary Art
The Auckland Art Gallery is New Zealands pre-eminent art museum and holds major collections of New Zealand, Australian and European visual arts. The Gallery reaches a broad audience though its exhibitions, education and publishing programme.
The Gallery is seeking an experienced collection and exhibitions curator with excellent knowledge of contemporary art practice.
Responsibilities of the position are to develop and manage the Gallerys contemporary collections, including the Chartwell Collection (www.chartwell.org.nz), through research, acquisition, display and interpretation. The Curator will also have particular responsibilities for high profile exhibitions such as The Auckland Triennial and the Walters Prize and will contribute, along with the curatorial team, to the development of a lively programme of temporary exhibitions, and publications including a scholarly journal to be published annually. You will have excellent people skills and be able to work closely with management plus a team of curators, educators and library staff.
The curator will also be required to liaise with artists, dealers, patrons and benefactors, institutional colleagues, Haerewa (the Gallerys Maori Advisory Committee) and Government agencies.
As the gallery is about to embark on a major building re-development programme, re-opening in 2009 you must demonstrate the experience and initiative to contribute to the exciting re-thinking, opportunities and challenges that go with such a period of change.
Auckland is the fastest growing city in New Zealand, with a population of 1 million in greater Auckland. It is a dynamic and changing city with a Polynesian beat, great beaches, islands and bush walks all within easy reach. In 2005 it was rated 8th out of the worlds Top 50 Cities in which to live for quality of life.
This is a permanent, full time position. A postgraduate tertiary qualification is required, a demonstrated understanding of the professional curatorial practices of a major art museum and awareness of New Zealands bi-cultural policies.
