Reykjavik Art Museum seeks a Museum Director

The Reykjavik Art Museum is seeking to fill the position of the Museum Director. The Museum Director will manage and coordinate administration and business activities for the Art Museum in Hafnarhus, Kjarvalsstadir and Asmundarsafn. An individual who is ambitious, enthusiastic and has a clear strategic vision of the Reykjavik Art Museum’s future operations is required.
Duties and Responsibilities

– The Director is responsible for the management and administration of the Museum, including financial issues, personnel issues and implementing decisions made by the Committee for Culture and Tourism and the government of the City.
– The Director will plan and organise exhibitions and other professional activities of the Museum.
– The Director will maintain liaisons and relations with the Museum’s international and local clients and colleagues.
Job Requirements

– Master’s degree in a field of discipline relevant to the position.
– Knowledge of fine arts and experience in cultural activities
– Outstanding supervisory and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within the community
– Communication skills and language proficiency: English and preferably one Scandinavian language
– Experience in collaborating internationally in the field of visual arts
In the application, the applicant should explain how he/she fulfils all the requirements. Furthermore, the applicant should in writing (max three A4 pages) describe his/her future vision of the Reykjavik Art Museum.

Please be advised that this is a fixed term employment of five years. The contract can be renewed once for the same period of time. Preferably the Director’s date of hire should be July 1st 2005.
Institution’s Primary Tasks:
Reykjavik Art Museum is committed to acquiring, cataloguing, preserving and displaying the art collections of the City, researching Icelandic visual arts and architecture, offering education about visual arts and architecture to the community by organising, among other things, exhibitions, lectures, guided tours, engaging in publishing activities and providing works of art on loan for exhibition, and by overseeing artworks in public places owned by the City of Reykjavik.

The museum shall endeavour to make the latest developments and trends in fine arts in Iceland and internationally available to the general public. Please see www.artmuseum.is
