Artistic Interruptions – Art in Nordland
Having received extensive attention from art professionals and academics, Art in Nordland will launch the site-specific art projects Artscape Nordland and Artistic Interruptions to an international audience. Both projects are considered innovative in relation to the mediation of art and culture as well as the collaboration between art and business.
Artistic Interruptions is a series of site-specific artworks produced by international artists in collaboration with the municipalities, towns and communities of Nordland County, Norway. In the period 2003-2006 around 15 art projects will be carried out in close dialogue with various local communities in the county. The aim is to examine issues relating to the local context, the communicative potential and function of art in the contemporary world, and on a more theoretical level to discuss “site-specificity” as an artistic genre and strategy.

Artistic Interruptions emphasizes the encounter between the artists and the individual communities. Communication and friction are crucial aspects of these arranged meetings. The produced artworks are decidedly open and process oriented in nature. Any form of expression is permissible. The project is intended to counter conservative notions of cultural identity. By focusing on current processes of change in the social and economic spheres, the project poses a challenge to the nostalgia for the past. Artistic Interruptions wishes to make a contribution, which focuses on identities of the future.

Throughout 2005, Artistic Interruptions will present new artworks by several renowned artists, including Maria Bustnes (NO/SE), Elmgreen & Dragset (DK/NO), Svein Flygari Johansen (NO), Carsten Holler (DE/SE), Alexandra Mir (SE/US), Jeppe Hein (DK), Tiravanija/ Lertchaiprasert/ Holm/ Jorgensen (TH/NO), Horbelt & Winter (DE) and Simon Starling (UK).

Artistic Interruptions is initiated by the Department of Cultural Affairs of Nordland County Council, funded by Arts Council Norway and supported by British Council, Norway. Curator is Per Gunnar Tverbakk in collaboration with Eivind Funresvik, Sanne Kofoed Olsen and Inger M. Renberg.

Artscape Nordland –
Between 1992 and 1998 Nordland County has acquired a unique sculpture collection, currently consisting of 33 works located in the same number of municipalities. With nature as their background, these works are permanently accessible to the public. This project is often discussed as one of the most interesting art projects to have been realized anywhere in the world in the past decade.
