The Dusseldorf-London-based artists’ collective hobbypopMUSEUM (Sophie von Hellermann, Christian Jendreiko, Matthias Lahme, Dietmar Lutz, Andre Niebur, Marie-Celine Schafer) is internationally known for its special approach to art exhibitions. hobbypopMUSEUM create site-specific installations using a range of expressive media, from painting, drawing, photography, film and music to text, performance, sculpture and architecture. Their installations are based on a specific concept and the way in which the group develops it on site, working within the exhibition space itself.

In terms of the Athens project, which will be presented at Bar-Restaurant Cosmos, in collaboration with the Deste Foundation, their installation will be based on the concept of ECHO.

The six artists arrived in Athens on 10 January and have already begun work in a specially arranged space on the 1st floor of the Deste Foundation’s Centre for Contemporary Art. The project is a work in progress incorporating painting and sculpture and its development will span over twelve days, following which the installation will be cut up and its fragments – “traces” or “echoes” of the original installation created on the Foundation’s first floor – will be placed at Bar-Restaurant Cosmos and so transform the space’s appearance. The entire process will be recorded on video, producing at the same time a documentary and a new (video-) work.

Monday, 24 January is the project’s deadline, on which ECHO will be presented in its final form. The six artists will then make interventions into the Bar-Restaurant’s music selections, lighting and menu catalogues, altering the space’s atmosphere through use of sound, painting, sculptural elements and projections. In this context hobbypopMUSEUM will also take on the role of performers, presenting a performance related to the installation’s concept.
