SPANISH PAVILION
51ST VENICE BIENNALE EXHIBITION OF INTERNATIONAL ART

The Curator, Bartomeu Mari, has invited Antoni Muntadas to show his work in the Spanish Pavilion at the next edition of the Venice Biennale in 2005, which will be held from June 12th to November 6th.

Continuing with the tradition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation, through the Directorate-General for Cultural and Scientific Relations, has appointed a Curator for the Spanish Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale Exhibition of International Art, which will be held from June 12th to November 6th, 2005. Bartomeu Mari, Chief Curator of the Museu d’Art Contemporani of Barcelona (MACBA) since March 2004, has been appointed. He in turn has chosen artist Antoni Muntadas to show his work in the Spanish Pavilion at this Venice Biennale.

Between 1996 and 2002, Bartomeu Mari (Ibiza, 1966) was Director of the Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and Curator at the IVAM Julio Gonzalez Centre in Valencia (1994-1996) and, between 1989 and 1994, Exhibitions Curator at the Fondation pour l’Architecture in Brussels (Belgium). In 2002 he was Curator of the Taipei Biennale (Taiwan).

The work of Antoni Muntadas (Barcelona, 1942) has been exhibited in Spanish museums and institutions, such as the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (1998) and the Museu d’Art Contemporani of Barcelona (2002), and international exhibitions such as Documenta 6 and X (Kassel, Germany), the Ludwig Museum (Budapest, Hungary), the Berkeley Art Museum (USA), the Fine Arts Museums of Buenos Aires (Republic of Argentina) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), as well as the National Gallery of Art (Ottawa, Canada), among others. Muntadas exhibitions are currently being held at the Neues Museum Weserburg, Bremen and at the Laboratorio Arte Alameda of Mexico D.F.

The Directorate General of Cultural and Scientific Relations will issue pertinent information on the plans for the Spanish Pavilion over the next few months.
