COSMOPOLIS 1 : Microcosmos X Macrocosmos
December 17th, 2004 – February 13th, 2005

Thessaloniki, Greece

First Balkan Biennial, organized by the State Museum of Contemporary Art from Thessalonica, director Miltiades Papanikolaou, and by the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, director Xanthippi Skarpia-Hoipel.
Cosmopolis versus Globalism. Cosmopolis versus National Prejudices. Cosmopolis versus Contemporary Exclusivism against Past Traditions and Spiritual Heritage.

Under the title Microcosmos X Macrocosmos, the exhibition attempts to explore the relationships between the regions and globalisation, localism and cosmopolitanism, urban and rural landscape, social engagement and spiritual motivation through the works of 90 artists from 10 South-Eastern European countries selected with the help of 10 national curators.

The aim of this exhibition is to promote specificity and differentiation inside a more and more unified world. And to try to oppose the present-day economic and cultural amorphousness as well as the mass cultural industry, through the strong reassertion of the ideas of personal evolution, individual inner accomplishment, cultivation of complementary identities, but also through social and political responsibility, hierarchy of true human values, planetary belonging, spiritual ecology. Cosmopolis should remind that the role of the artist has always been and still is to reinvent a dignified and conscious position of Man in the universe. And to promote a more equitable, more humane and a truly ecumenical universalism.
