SALA REKALDE closes its 2004 programme with a new exhibition entitled Meanwhile, in another place Contemporary Art Awards of the Executive Council of Biscay.
This show features the work of 11 artists who during the years 2001 and 2002 benefited from grants by the local government of the Biscay province in the Basque Country.
The exhibition Meanwhile, in another place corresponds to the artistic practice produced by the artists during an open period of research. The exhibition in itself works as a device to analyse the relationship between art production and artistic research. In this new phase no straightforward answers are demanded ( rather the possibility to comprehend the complexity of how artistic knowledge is produced, recognised and interpreted. In this regard, broad attention is given to the specific living conditions of the artists, such as: Their permanent/temporal base (during the time of research), the different way they organised this activity (through education, international residence programmes, or studio practice) and, lastly, the channels that determine the presentation of the art work (grants, exhibitions, collaborations or specific participations in other platforms outside the institution), raising the idea of artistic production as a work-in-process activity.
Meanwhile, in another place takes on the idea of provisionally considering the exhibition as a common reference ground for the diverse artistic practices that confluence in time and space. This simultaneity, however, generates a sort of parallel action when all the particular artistic places implied in each single production are gathered. All the works exhibited offer a complex vision of how we can interpret a pre-determined location( an imaginaire that remains forever incomplete in its own representation and constantly needs to be contested.
The work of Erlea Maneros, Itxaso Diaz, Abigail Lazkoz and Mikel Eskauriaza navigates the concept of space from a socio-political perspective; Miren Arenzana, Itziar Bilbao-Urrutia, Yolanda De Los Bueis and Naia del Castillo develop different artistic positions towards what we could define as an inner space governed by micro-politics; Isabel de Naveran, Ismael Iglesias and Marina Mendieta comprehend space from the formal language of sculpture, photography and performance.
During the exhibition a growing parallel archive will host contributions from all people involved in any way in the exhibition, such as the participant artists, the institutional staff, the curator and further outside contributions. Every entry will conform a collection of items referring to cultural production, and relates to the conditions surrounding artistic work. The spectators could browse what all the contributors give and, if they wish to, they could give something too. (The Parallel Archive is an initiative by Sarah Pierce).
