Static on a television monitor, feedback emitted by an amplifier, crackling radio reception, the hum of an electric fan on a hot and humid summer night–all equate with our common understanding of white noise, implying a failed transmission or simply, annoying background noise. In scientific terms, white noise is the compression of audible sound frequencies giving off equal amounts of energy, per hertz. Like white light, which contains all visible wavelengths of the color spectrum, it is simultaneously everything and nothing. In the context of this exhibition, white noise serves as an apt metaphor and a kind of synesthetic device to explore and unravel our sensory conscience. As white noise conjures a cacophony of high-pitched, piercing sounds and at the same time the soothing loll of crashing ocean waves, we enter into the stratospheric world of the imperceptible where transmission waves, magnetic fields and radio signals hover over us. A world of ‘noises’ that buzz and hiss, that we may not hear or see, feel or touch, but that penetrates our everyday lives and the visual, sonic and structural landscape that we occupy.
GALLERY HOURS: 12-6 PM or CURTAIN CLOSED MONDAYS. ALWAYS FREE.
