Two new exhibitions at Moderna Museet in Stockholm
Meret Oppenheim 4 September – 31 October
The German-Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim´s (1913-85) works and person are forever tied to surrealist and 20th century art history. Her first and only museum retrospective during her lifetime was at Moderna Museet in 1967, and that was when the famous Ma Gouvernante – My Nurse – Mein Kindermadchen was purchased for the museum collection. Now the museum is featuring Meret Oppenheim again, with selected works – drawings, objects and paintings – from Swedish and international public and private collections. Many of the surrealists also dabbled in fashion, and Meret Oppenheim was both a model and a jewellery and costume designer. The film IMAGO Meret Oppenheim, will be shown during the exhibition.
Man Ray 4 September – 31 October
Moderna Museet´s exhibition of Man Ray (1895-1976) features a selection of photographs by this illustrious surrealist, including his photobased works, fashion photography and numerous portraits. Like many photographers he discovered new technical solutions thanks to accidental occurrences in the darkroom. This is how many of the abstract compositions that made him famous were created. Man Ray´s fascination with fashion was born in Paris in the 1920s, where he worked as a photographer for a fashion designer.
