‘Modernism is back’ declares Jan Verwoert in the summer issue of frieze. Verwoert investigates recent trends in contemporary art practice. Plus Doug Aitken talks to Ed Ruscha whose drawings and photographs are the subject of two major surveys at the Whitney Museum of American Art this summer and the conversation sheds light on the ways these two LA artists from different generations conceive of, and experience their city.

Jennifer Higgie visits Carol Rama in Turin and views her retrospective at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. Also featured: Tom Morton on Alan Michael, Kirsty Bell on Kirsten Pieroth, Dominic Eichler on David Zink Yi, Bert Rebhandl on Erik Steinbrecher and Mark Godfrey on ‘A Minimal Future? Art as Object 1958-68′ at MoCA, Los Angeles. And for our last ever Picture Piece Morrissey writes about his friend, the photographer Linder.

In the front section: Joerg Heiser and Jan Verwoert discuss the relationship between art and documentary filmmaking with Yael Bartana, Annika Eriksson, Anri Sala and Gitte Villesen; Dan Fox wonders whether contemporary art’s engagement with music could be more adventurous; Bert Rebhandl investigates how Viennese Actionism has finally been embraced by the Austrian establishment; Michael Wilson listens to New York’s WPS1 Art Radio and Adam Szymczyk celebrates the life of the late Edward Krasinski.

The reviews section includes: Lukas Duwenhogger, ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’, Christian Jankowski, ‘Sitings: Installation Art 1969-2002′, Martin Kippenberger, Kai Althoff, Abel Auer, Armin Kramer, Robert Elfgen, Kirsten Everberg, David Thorpe, Christine Borland, Lynda Benglis, ‘News from Tehran’, Bonnie Camplin, Charles Long, Karen Andreassian, ‘Blasting the Future!’, Jesper Just, Matthias Muller, Anna Barriball, Chris Hanson and Hendrika Sonnenberg, ‘Before the End’, Alex Frost, Sol LeWitt, Eva Weinmayr, ‘Playlist’, David Batchelor, Rosa Barba, Udo Koch and Cees Krijnen.
