ASSOCIATE CURATORS
Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall is adding to its creative strength and knowledge with four of the world’s leading curators of contemporary art: Daniel Birnbaum, Rosa Martinez, Jerome Sans and Sarit Shapira.
As of June 1, 2004, Daniel Birnbaum, Rosa Martinez, Jerome Sans and Sarit Shapira will all be associate curators of Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall.
Over the past 17 years, Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall has introduced artists and produced unique exhibitions. “Our ambition is to enhance the vitality that Magasin 3 represents, by letting people with a profound expertise take part in the institution’s history, excellent collection and the work methods we have developed. Apart from being a sounding board, these four curators will engage in long-term planning of their own exhibitions for Magasin 3,” says David Neuman, director of Magasin 3.
Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall has over the past years taken an interest in the activities of these four curators. Daniel Birnbaum from Stockholm was commissioned as a writer ten years ago, in connection with the institution’s exhibition of James Turrell. He has also contributed essays on subsequent occasions. Rosa Martinez, from Barcelona, visited Sweden in the mid 1990s. Her work then resulted in an exhibition in 1996 of contemporary Spanish art at Goteborgs Konsthall. Jerome Sans, Paris, curated the exhibition Crash Between Islands, a historical meeting between the artists Chen Zehn and Nari Ward, which was shown within the framework of the Arkipelag project when Stockholm was Cultural Capital of Europe in 1998. Since then, he has been a successful director of Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Sarit Shapira, Tel Aviv, is a leading authority on the contemporary Middle Eastern art scene. Her ground-breaking exhibitions, with participants from many countries in the region have enjoyed huge international attention.
“Putting together such an experienced and professional group of curators is simply fantastic. Together with Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall’s curators, the associate curators will be a magnificent intellectual resource for the institution and for Sweden’s art scene in general,” David Neuman adds.
