Art Basel is being held for the 35th time in Basel (Switzerland) from June 16 to 21, 2004. It is the world’s leading art show and annual meeting place of the international art world. 270 galleries from each continent will be taking part, selected by the “Art Committee” from 850 applications. They will be showing works by over 1,500 artist of the 20th and 21st century. Special sectors will present print graphics, film and one-person shows by young artists. The “Art Unlimited” hall will include special outsize projects. The exhibitors are on a higher level than ever, and participation has been extended by the addition of some interesting young galleries and leading dealers from overseas and in the field of vintage photography.
New: “Art Basel Conversations”
On the mornings before the opening of the show, there will be the “Art Basel Conversations” with the collaboration of Bvlgari, Bvlgari, the Contemporary Italian jewelers. These presentations and panel discussions will feature renowned personalities of the international art scene. Ernst Beyeler, Kazuyo Sejima, Olafur Eliasson, Kasper Konig, Zaha Hadid and many more who will present and discuss their ideas and projects connected with the subject of art collecting.
New: projects on the Exhibition Square in front of the art show
The newly designed Exhibition Square offers the exhibiting galleries an ideal platform for presenting large-scale projects (installations, sculptures etc.) in an urban setting. Projects by Monica Bonvicini, Elmgreen & Dragset, Dan Graham, Paul McCarthy, Matt Mullican and others will be on display.
New galleries
99% of last year’s exhibitors re-applied, and participation by a number of galleries for classical photography from the USA and various young galleries will further enrich the internationally unique attendance. The field of classical photography is supplemented by Michael Hoppen Gallery (London), Robert Mann Gallery (New York), Laurence Miller Gallery (New York), Edwynn Houk Gallery (New York) and Ubu Gallery (New York). Galleries showing contemporary art are joined by Taka Ishii Gallery (Tokyo), Tanya Bonakdar (New York), Foksal Gallery Foundation (Warsaw), Annet Gelink Gallery (Amsterdam), Galerie Jule Kewenig (Cologne), Galleri Riis (Oslo), Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris), Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art (Lisbon) and China Art Archive & Warehouse (Beijing). Galleria Continua (San Gimignano), Anton Kern Gallery (New York) and Galerie Erna Hecey (Luxembourg) are exhibiting again this year after a short pause. St. Etienne (New York) and John Berggruen Gallery, also from New York, will reinforce the galleries showing classics of the 20th century.
New: “Professional Day”
Art Basel is launching the “Professional Day” on the closing day of the show (Monday, June 21st, 2004, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). It is aimed at curators, art dealers and collectors. For them, there will be a special program in and around the art show. From 10 am to 12 noon there will be a panel discussion with internationally-known experts on the topic of “The Challenge of Media Arts” in the auditorium of the “Schaulager”. This will consider problems associated with the conservation of new media. Moreover, the exhibiting galleries are asked to show special exhibits and campaigns on “Professional Day”. Participation in the “Professional Day” is free of charge; it is, however, limited to specialists of the art world (invitation by the galleries and the Show Management).
New curator “Art Film”
For the first time the international renowned Swiss artist John Armleder will curate the special “Art Film” sector in the Stadtkino Basel.
