The City of Bari, in collaboration with The Merz Foundation and Futuro Association, presents the exhibition “Domenico Bianchi – Mario Merz”, opening in Bari next May 1th inside one of the most impressive medieval Italian castle and curated by Ludovico Pratesi.
In summer 2003 the City of Bari promoted two artworks made by Sol LeWitt and Mimmo Paladino, who created two site-specific pieces dedicated to the relationship between Bari and the Mediterranean Sea. This summer the annual “Art&Maggio Bari” exhibition presents a site specific project thought by Domenico Bianchi and an homage to Mario Merz, recently passed away.
Merz Foundation presents a large sized igloo, realized by the internationally renowed leading member of Arte Povera for the Fundacao Serralves, Porto in 1998. In the middle of the Reinassance Courtyard of the Castello Svevo, on the double igloo structure stands a silver painted deer, whose eyes looks far beyond the ancient walls of the castle. The animal creates a spiritual atmosphere, which links the igloo to the project by Domenico Bianchi, inside the castle.
Along the twenty meters wall of the Angioina Room, a display of eleven paintings, made by Bianchi out of wood, white gold, wax and fibreglass, designs a huge cross, represented as a symbolic sign and inspired to a spiritual view of Mario Merz’s work and life.
Hopefulmonster, Turin will publish a catalogue, curated by Costantino D’Orazio, which illustrates the site-specific displays in Bari and some of the most important experiences by Bianchi – in indoor space – and Merz – in outdoor locations.
