Compiler//01 “Was ist Kunst, Marinela Kozelj?”
Compiler is a new presentation platform for contemporary art, in particular video and audio works, short films, performances and processes, and explores essential questions and concerns of international contemporary art.
The first issue of Compiler, Compiler//01, focuses on art in former Yugoslavia. The basic concept was devised in collaboration with the artist Milica Tomic, and Rasa Todosijevic’s Performance “Was ist Kunst, Marinela Kozelj?” (1978) was the point of departure for an inquiry into emancipatory politics in art. It focuses on works from artists and writers who are critical of nationalist tendencies and systems, and who are exploring other ways to (co-)exist.
Therefore the contributions collected in Compiler//01 document a universal paradigm for expressing resistance in culture and art and the potential of autonomous platforms. They range from conceptual analyses and models to activist interventions, from utopian sketches to parodies. They deal with stumbling blocks to coexistence, nomadic ways of thought, or the renewal of humanist ideals. But above all, they focus on boldly transcending the obstacles presented by prevailing norms and realities:
Mehmet Behluli (artist, Pristina), Walter Benjamin (art historian, Belgrade), Sokol Beqiri (artist, Peja), Ljiljana Blagojevic (theoretician, Belgrade), Dunja Blazevic (curator, Sarajevo), Boris Buden (publicist, Vienna, Zagreb), Igor Grubic (artist, Zagreb), Albert Heta (artist, Pristina), IRWIN (artists, Ljubljana), Aleksandar Battista Ilic (artist, Zagreb), Hristina Ivanoska (artist, Skopje), Sanja Ivekovic (artist, Zagreb), Nebojsa Jovanovic (theoretician, Sarajevo), Sejla Kameric (artist, Sarajevo), Ivana Keser, (artist, Zagreb), Merita Koci (artist, Pristina), Andreja Kuluncic (artist, Zagreb), Miodrag Krkobabic (artist, Belgrade), Shkelzen Maliqi (philosopher, Pristina), Nebojsa Milikic (artist, Belgrade), Svebor Midzic (theoretician, Belgrade), Oliver Musovik (artist, Skopje), Branimir Stojanovic (theoretician, Belgrade), Alma Suljevic (artist, Sarajevo), Rasa Todosijevic (artist, Belgrade), Milica Tomic (artist, Belgrade), Nebojsa Vilic (theoretician, Skopje)
Compiler//01 was developed as a research project of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Zurich in conjunction with Tweaklab AG, tools for media and art, Basel. The Commission for Technology and Innovation (KTI) of the Swiss federal government provided the project with substantial support.
