For its first exhibition at the Covent des Cordeliers, an historical building dating from the 14th century, ARC was inspired to bring together young international artists whose works are based on the notion of “space-jacking” and the appropriation of space. Through installations, performative actions and films, these artists re-activate spaces and invest them with new functions.
The Franco-Portugese architect Didier Fiuza Faustino has chosen to respond to the invitation with a fleeting architectural installation, Revolutions, that employs the silver and gold surface of a survival cover in unexpected ways. This structure acts as both an exhibition space and a space for discussion and debate ( “Le Club des Cordeliers”).
Nick Relph and Oliver Payne present their films, shot together since 1999. Influenced by Skate & Punk cultures, the two British artists re-appropriate a world controlled by consumer society through wanderings that sketch out a new psycho-geography of London and its suburbs.
The German artist, Tino Sehgal proposes a new ” sculpture ” that uses museum guards as actors. Opposed to the work of art as an object, he inscribes the body in the space while adapting contemporary dance principles to the temporality of the exhibition.
In accordance with their collaborative practice, Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla, artists of American and Cuban origin respectively, create a number of participatory installations or scenarios in connection with the architecture, the history of the Covent and the Parisian urban context.
Curators: Laurence Bosse, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Angeline Scherf, Anne Dressen, Vivian Rehberg assisted by Ana Janevski
