“This white-on-white tome is spectacular…

If you can never get enough of the mystery of art, here is a good place to start.”

– Linda Yablonsky, Time Out New York

The Drawing Center’s lavishly produced limited edition book Tablet features reproductions of the most significant group of drawings in Ellsworth Kelly’s oeuvre. This hand-bound, full-color art object provides wonderful insight into Kelly’s creative processes and his personal inspirations by compiling 188 of the artist’s compelling sketches, cut-outs, collages, and studies. Tablet comprises an incredibly important body of work that was recently acquired by The Menil Collection in Houston.

This limited edition book was published on the occasion of The Drawing Center’s 25th Anniversary and in conjunction with the 2002 exhibition Ellsworth Kelly, Tablet 1948-1973. The exhibition, which was curated by Yve-Alain Bois, Joseph Pulitzer, Jr. Professor of Modern Art, Harvard University, presented a first-time look at Kelly’s working process during a prolific and pivotal span in his career.

The Drawing Center is the only not-for-profit institution in the U.S. to focus solely on the exhibition of drawings, both historical and contemporary. It was established in 1976 to provide opportunities and services for emerging and under-recognized artists; to demonstrate the significance and diversity of drawings throughout history; and to stimulate public dialogue on issues of art and culture.
